Prematurity

Premature children can experience a varied pattern of development, with certain aspects taking longer to develop than in full-term babies.

One challenge may be their speech and language development, which may progress at a slower pace.

Some premature infants may have difficulty with self-regulation, becoming easily over-aroused. Reading their cues can be challenging as they tend to be more passive, making it harder for caregivers to understand their needs. Some premature babies may struggle with tolerating large amounts of stimulation or extended interactions.

As they grow older, these children may remain easily over-aroused and exhibit unsettled behaviour. As preschoolers, they may experience shorter attention spans and challenges in problem-solving. Cognitive and social delays may be observed, as they might take more time to develop constructive play and social skills. Issues with sleeping and feeding can also be common in premature infants.

Parents of premature children can find advice, guidance, and support to navigate these unique challenges.
